What is Outdoor School?
Science Where it Happens
Outdoor School takes 6th grade students from the classroom to the outdoors where they can study those things best studied outdoors: plants, animals, soil, and water.
Immersive Experience
Outdoor education can take place in the school yard, vacant lot, or on a field trip, but the greatest gains are made when students can live outdoors for an extended period of time. Outdoor School is a rich, 24-hour, living experience where, students and can explore forest, streams, and fields. Students learn faster, understand better, and retain information longer.
Academic Skills
Students apply acquired knowledge and skills in mathematics, social studies, language, health, art, and music while learning about natural science. They use these skills to investigate, measure, and report discoveries in the natural sciences.
Social-Emotional Skills
Outdoor School is a challenging and exciting experience for students. as they live in cabin groups alongside students from other schools. Learning to navigate social dynamics with classmates and soon-to-be friends while sharing meals and recreational activities is an important part of Outdoor School.
It’s Fun!
For many students, Outdoor School is the highlight of sixth grade, and students create memories that last a lifetime. Many return to volunteer as high school students because they had such a great time!

The MESD Outdoor School program has served students in Multnomah County and beyond since 1966. Your student is about to experience a long-standing Oregon tradition!
